Our History

St. Theresa's Hospital was started in the year 1938 by a group French Missionary Sisters for treating female TB patients. Tuberculosis was a much dreaded disease in those days owing to a lack of medical facilities and slow progress of medical science in this field. At first, a small cottage was built as living quarters for the Sisters and the hospital staff. Later a building was constructed for TB. patients and was named St. Theresa's TB Sanatorium.

Initially, this service was for female TB patients only However as patients started arriving from all over the sate and also from neighbouring states, there was much demand to treat male TB patients too. Therefore, male TB patients were initially treated as outpatients but later small shelters were erected for treating them as inpatients.

In 1955 an outpatient dispensary was opened to meet the growing needs of local people together with a separate block with beds and a clinic for maternity cases. In a very short time, St Theresa's Maternity Unit gained much popularity in Bangalore.

Over a period of time, X-Ray and other facilities together with a clinical laboratory were started and general cases began to be treated with help from specialist consultants on call. The Hospital came to be popularly known as "GUDDADA ASPATHRE' in Kannada, meaning HILLTOP Hospital.

In 1990 an operation theater with basic facilities was opened for conducting surgeries in obstetric, gynecological and general cases. With a marked increase in the number of patients which required better healthcare facilities, there was an urgent need to enhance and upgrade the existing facilities.

Therefore a new block was opened in 2001 with to house outpatient clinics, an O.T Complex, a Radiology unit, a Laboratory, a Pharmacy and a few special wards. Much emphasis was laid on providing good lighting and ventilation in this new block to enhance patient comfort.

At present St. Theresa's Hospital ably functions as a Multi-Speciality Centre with numerous facilitates and modern health care modalities. It is fully pledged to provide holistic health care with a divine touch to all those who come here as patients.
